Portuguese architect whose professional career developed steadily and predominantly within institutional contexts during the second half of the twentieth century. Although less prominent within the historiography of Portuguese architecture, Sousa Ribeiro work reflects the pragmatism and technical transition that characterized the passage from late modernism to the democratic period in Portugal.

Born in 1930, this architect graduated in architecture at a time of profound urban transformation in the country. His professional trajectory consolidated between the 1960s and 1980s, decades marked by the expansion of public infrastructures, higher education facilities, and territorial planning. His activity focused primarily on technical collaboration in large-scale institutional buildings and on the planning of leisure and public-use facilities.

Among his most relevant contributions was his participation in the technical teams responsible for the expansion of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, where he played an important role in the spatial and structural articulation of the new facilities. In parallel, he developed projects related to leisure infrastructure and public space, notably the Furadouro Camping Park in Ovar, designed in 1980. This project distinguished itself through its strong environmental integration, achieved in close collaboration with leading Portuguese landscape architects such as António Viana Barreto and Edgar Sampaio Fontes.

António Sousa Ribeiro’s work belongs to a generation of architects that contributed decisively to the modernization of Portuguese public infrastructure through technically rigorous and context-sensitive interventions. His career reflects an approach to architecture grounded in functionality, territorial integration, and institutional continuity during a period of significant political and social transformation in Portugal.
