Bartolomeu Costa Cabral was a prominent Portuguese architect and urban planner, recognised for his significant contribution to modern architecture in Portugal. Graduating from the Escola Superior de Belas-Artes in Lisbon, Costa Cabral developed a career characterised by an innovative approach to architecture, balancing modernity with a deep respect for the country’s historical and cultural context.
Among his most notable works is the Bloco das Águas Livres, completed in partnership with Nuno Teotónio Pereira, an icon of modernist architecture in Lisbon. This project, finished in 1971, reflects the search for innovative housing solutions within the urban context of the time and continues to be a reference in collective housing in Portugal.
Another notable project is the Escola do Castelo in Lisbon, a school building that exemplifies his careful and integrated approach to architectural design, prioritising functionality and the relationship with the surrounding environment. The design aimed to create flexible, humanised learning spaces, reflecting a commitment to education and the well-being of students.
Additionally, the University of Covilhã, one of Costa Cabral’s major university projects, stands out for its innovative design and architectural integration with the city’s urban and natural fabric. The project not only addressed the institution’s needs but also promoted interaction and knowledge exchange between the various university spaces, making it a landmark in the development of educational architecture in Portugal.
Costa Cabral was also an active participant in the Lisbon Master Plan and a committed member of the Order of Architects, where he advocated for the valorisation of architecture as a discipline deeply connected to society and the urban context. His work spans a wide range of residential, commercial, cultural, and urban projects, always with a focus on aesthetics and functionality.
In addition to his professional practice, he was a professor and mentor to several generations of architects, passing on his extensive knowledge and critical vision of architecture. Bartolomeu Costa Cabral’s legacy remains relevant in modern Portuguese architecture, with a keen eye always on the social and cultural needs of his time.
