Carlos Portugal Ramos is a distinguished Portuguese architect and urban planner, widely recognized for his work in institutional architecture, urban development and technical infrastructure, as well as for his connection to one of the most significant architectural lineages in twentieth-century Portugal. His career reflects the continuity and transformation of Portuguese modern architecture across generations, combining large-scale urban thinking with technical and infrastructural expertise.
Born into a family deeply associated with Portuguese architecture, Carlos Portugal Ramos is the son of Carlos Manuel Ramos and the grandson of Carlos Chambers Ramos, one of the pioneering figures of architectural modernism in Portugal. He is also the brother of the internationally acclaimed winemaker João Portugal Ramos. This familial context placed him within a cultural environment closely connected to architecture, urbanism and the broader transformation of Portuguese society during the twentieth century.
Throughout his professional activity, Carlos Portugal Ramos distinguished himself through the development of large-scale urban studies and technically demanding infrastructural projects. Among his most significant works was the 1997 feasibility study for the redevelopment of the Margueira shipyard, on the south bank of the Tagus River, coordinated in collaboration with the architect Carlos Dias Coelho. This project represented an important reflection on post-industrial urban reconversion and the transformation of obsolete industrial territories within the Lisbon metropolitan area.
In parallel, he participated in architectural studies and projects for the technical facilities and communication centres of the Companhia Portuguesa Rádio Marconi, including infrastructures in Madeira. These works required the integration of complex technical systems with architectural and territorial considerations, reflecting his capacity to operate at the intersection of infrastructure, planning, and architecture.
Carlos Portugal Ramos belongs to a generation of Portuguese architects whose work contributed to the modernization of territorial infrastructure and metropolitan planning during the late twentieth century.
