Born in Lisbon, Cabral de Melo completed his architecture degree at the Escola Superior de Belas-Artes de Lisboa in 1970 and further expanded his professional expertise by teaching at the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies in New York between 1970 and 1972, before returning to Lisbon to lecture at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon.
In the 1970s, Cabral de Melo made notable contributions to the field of housing, working on various social housing projects in collaboration with colleagues such as Maria Manuel Godinho de Almeida and Vítor Figueiredo. His work in this area included projects for the Fundo de Fomento da Habitação, the EPUL, the Câmara Municipal de Setúbal, and several housing cooperatives in Alverca, Alto Zambujal, and Vila Nova de Caparica. He was also involved in designing tourism facilities for the Câmara Municipal de Ourique.
His later career saw him take on larger urban planning projects, including the Urbanization Plan for the Historic Center of Braga, showcasing his ongoing commitment to shaping both contemporary and historic urban landscapes. Cabral de Melo's extensive portfolio also includes several Detailed Urbanization Plans that further reflect his deep understanding of the social, functional, and aesthetic roles of architecture in urban environments.
Throughout his career, Cabral de Melo remained deeply committed to the idea of architecture as a means of enhancing the quality of life, blending modernism with social responsibility. His legacy includes not only his architectural projects but also his influence as an educator, mentor, and advocate for a holistic approach to urban development.
