Portuguese architect and urban planner whose professional career was closely associated with public administration and territorial planning during the second half of the twentieth century.
Much of Fernando Ressano Garcia professional activity developed within the sphere of public planning institutions, particularly through his work at the Direção-Geral do Planeamento Urbanístico, where he served as division chief and architectural advisor. His career unfolded during a period of rapid urban expansion in Portugal, marked by the development of new residential areas, infrastructural modernization, and the consolidation of post-war urban planning strategies.
Ressano Garcia distinguished himself through projects that combined urban integration, technical rigor, and formal restraint. In 1978, he received an Honourable Mention of the Prémio Valmor for the Office Building at Rua Doutor António Cândido, 10–10B, in Lisbon. The project was widely praised by both the jury and contemporary critics, including the architect Nuno Portas, for its formal simplicity and its intelligent integration within the historic urban fabric, avoiding unnecessary decorative gestures while maintaining a strong architectural presence.
His work also included participation in important urban development operations in Lisbon, notably the urban and residential planning of the Lagares d’El-Rei area, integrated within the expansion of Alvalade during the mid-twentieth century. In parallel, he collaborated on technical planning teams responsible for major housing developments during the 1950s, including integration studies for the Bairro do Restelo.
