Graduated in Architecture from the Escola de Belas Artes de Lisboa (EBAL) in 1955 Simões de Carvalho pursued further studies in France, obtaining a diploma in urbanism from the Institut d’Urbanisme de l’Université de Paris, in 1959, supported by a French government scholarship.
During his academic years, this architect gained practical experience through internships at the atelier of architects Lima Franco and Manollo Pottier in Lisbon, and at the Urbanization Office of the Ministry of Overseas Affairs with architects João de Aguiar and Lucínio Cruz. Between 1956 and 1959, he worked in Paris at the atelier of renowned architect Le Corbusier and his associate André Wogenscky, immersing himself in avant-garde architectural practices.
Upon returning to Portugal, Simões de Carvalho applied his expertise to various urban planning projects, notably in Angola, Portugal, and Brazil. His work is characterized by a deep understanding of the socio-economic and ecological aspects of urban development. He held significant public positions and engaged in private practice, contributing to the modernization of urban landscapes in Lusophone territories.
In addition to his professional practice, Simões de Carvalho has been an active participant in architectural discourse. He shared his experiences and insights at events organized by the Ordem dos Arquitectos, offering valuable perspectives to both contemporaries and emerging architects.
Throughout his career, Simões de Carvalho has been recognized for his methodical approach to urbanism, integrating technical, economic, social, and ecological considerations into his projects.
