Francisco da Conceição Silva was a prominent Portuguese architect born in Lisbon. He studied at the Escola de Belas Artes de Lisboa, where the close-knit environment allowed him to engage with students from other artistic disciplines such as painting and sculpture, which influenced his architectural practice. He graduated as an architect in 1949 and, after brief stints at Adelino Nunes' studio and the Federation of Pension Funds, partnered with architect José Bastos, focusing on designing middle- and upper-class residential homes.
In 1953, he established his own studio, where, faced with a lack of commissions, he turned to furniture design. He exhibited his work at Lisbon's renowned "Jalco" store, alongside artists like Júlio Pomar and Querubim Lapa, earning significant attention for its innovative approach. During the 1950s, Conceição Silva designed homes that aligned with a moderate modernist style, influenced by Brazilian modern architecture, while avoiding an uncritical application of Le Corbusier's Five Points of Architecture.
In the 1960s, he expanded his practice into commercial and tourist architecture, with notable projects like the Rampa Store (1955), the Hotel do Mar in Sesimbra (1958-64), and the Troia Peninsula Urbanization (1970-76). He also designed several residential projects, including the Casa Ribeiro da Cunha (1952) and a house in Guincho (1960), the latter exhibited at the Gulbenkian Foundation in 1961.
In 1975 Conceição Silva fled to Brazil, at the age of 53, where he continued his architectural work. His later Brazilian projects, such as the Casa Steinberg (1976) and Casa Coslowski (1976), exemplified his evolving modernist approach, adapting to local materials and contexts while maintaining a strong experimental spirit.
Conceição Silva's legacy endures through the influence he had on the cultural and architectural community, mentoring a generation of professionals, including notable architects and artists. He passed away in Brazil in 1982.
