A Lisbon native, Silva Dias completed his degree in architecture at the Escola de Belas-Artes de Lisboa in 1957, presenting a project on collective housing that reflected his early interest in social housing issues. He later achieved a Ph.D. in Urban Planning from the Technical University of Lisbon in 2000 with the thesis “Raízes e Perspectivas do Urbanismo Meridional Português,” exploring Mediterranean influences on Portuguese urban settlements.

Silva Dias began his professional journey in Almada, working at the Urban Planning Office of the city council. Shortly after, he contributed to the Inquérito à Arquitectura Popular em Portugal, a pivotal study on vernacular architecture. In 1960, he joined the Housing Technical Office of Lisbon City Council. Politically engaged, he was elected to the leadership of the National Architects’ Union in 1963, though political interference prevented him from assuming his role.

His influence extended to leadership positions, such as serving as President of the Associação dos Arquitectos Portugueses between 1990 and 1992, during which he promoted the profession’s modernization. An advocate of academic excellence, Silva Dias was a longstanding educator, first at ESBAL and later at the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon, fostering new generations of architects.

From 2006 to 2011, he served as Provedor da Arquitectura at the Ordem dos Arquitectos, where he championed ethical practices and professional advocacy. Over the decades, his contributions—spanning practice, research, teaching, and civic involvement—have shaped Portuguese architecture, leaving an enduring legacy in both the discipline and the built environment.
