Born in Mora in 1943, João Paciência is a prominent Portuguese architect whose career spans decades of innovative architectural and urban planning contributions. He graduated in Architecture from the Escola Superior de Belas-Artes de Lisboa (ESBAL) in 1970 and began his professional journey collaborating with esteemed architects Nuno Teotónio Pereira and Nuno Portas (1970-1974). He later joined the Grupo de Almada, Monte de Caparica of the Fundo de Fomento da Habitação (1975-1980), where he worked on social housing projects. During this period, he also designed prefabricated concrete schools (1976-1982) and contributed to urban planning efforts as a municipal urbanist in Portalegre (1978-1982).

Paciência's architectural portfolio reflects a diverse range of typologies, including the Atrium Saldanha in Lisbon (1991-1993), designed with the renowned Catalan architect Ricard Bofill, and the Sheraton Hotel in Porto (1994-2003). Other notable projects include the Saldanha Residence (1993-1999) in Lisbon, the HabiParque residential complex in Telheiras (1985), and the Exponor exhibition centre in Porto (1985). His international work includes projects in Angola and Algeria during the 2000s, highlighting his versatility and adaptability to different cultural and environmental contexts.

Paciência's contributions to architecture have earned him prestigious awards, such as two Prémios Valor in Lisbon and the Prémio Cidade de Almada. In 2006, he was recognized as a Comendador of the Ordem Militar de Sant'Iago da Espada for his artistic and professional *achievements. Alongside his practice, he has had a significant role in education, teaching design courses at ESBAL and the Universidade Lusíada in the 1980s and 1990s.
