Distinguished Portuguese architect, João Santa-Rita is recognised both for his architectural work and his involvement in academia and culture. Born in Lisbon on 20 May 1960, he graduated in Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture of the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa in 1983, having previously attended the Summer Course at the Darmstadt University of Architecture, Germany, in 1982.

Since 1976, he collaborated in the studio of architect José Santa-Rita, before working with Manuel Vicente in Macau (1986–1988). In 1990, he co-founded the studio Santa-Rita Arquitectos with José Santa-Rita, developing innovative projects both in Portugal and internationally.

Among his most notable projects are the Museu do Fado (1997), the Marquês de Pombal metro station (1996), the Cabo Ruivo metro station (1998) in Lisbon, and the revitalisation of the historic centre of Samarkand, Uzbekistan (1991). He participated in prestigious competitions, winning an honourable mention in the International Competition for the Revitalisation of the ULUGH-BEG CENTER in Samarkand (1990) and the first prize in the International Competition for the Urbanisation Plan of Almada Nascente in collaboration with WS Atkins and Richard Rogers Partnership.

Santa-Rita has also played a significant role as a curator and organiser of architectural exhibitions in places such as Milan, Paris, and Lisbon. He was invited to join the Akademie Für Baukultur in Germany and has participated in conferences and seminars around the world, including in the USA, France, Italy, and Spain.

He was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award in 2012 and is the author of an extensive portfolio, which includes residential, urban, and cultural projects. Other notable works include the Urban Renewal Plan of Cacilhas (1998), the Embassy of Portugal in Berlin (1998), and the extension of the Museu Nacional Machado de Castro in Coimbra (1999).

Recognised for the impact of his work both in Portugal and abroad, João Santa-Rita continues to contribute to contemporary architecture with innovative projects and a steadfast commitment to architectural education and culture.
