João Simões was a distinguished Portuguese architect, celebrated for his contributions to modernist architecture and his commitment to public and private projects.
Early in his career, he joined the Gabinete de Urbanização Colonial (GUC), working alongside João António de Aguiar. In 1946, Simões became one of the founding members of ICAT (Iniciativas Culturais Arte e Técnica), a significant cultural movement that advanced modernist principles in Portugal during the mid-20th century. After his participation in the 1948 National Congress, Simões left the GUC and began working as the Chief Architect for Amadeu Gaudêncio, marking a decisive moment in his growing independence as an architect.
Simões was recognised with numerous accolades, including the Lisbon Municipal Architecture Prize (1945) and the Prémio Valmor (1949) for his design of the Companhia de Seguros Sagres building on Rua Artilharia 1. His architectural portfolio spans remarkable projects such as the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon, inaugurated in 1954 and expanded to become Europe’s largest stadium, and the Armazéns Frigoríficos de Alcântara (now Museu do Oriente).
Other important works include the Estádio Universitário de Lisboa, the Catedral de Bissau, the Pavilhão da Secção da Vida Popular for the 1940 Exposição do Mundo Português (in collaboration with António Reis Camelo), the Cartaxo Municipal Market (1947), and the Cartaxo City Hall (1982). His legacy also includes the Café Avenida (now McDonald’s) in Braga and the Prémio Valmor-winning residential building in Praça Duque de Saldanha, Lisbon.
