Full Professor at Lisbon School of Architecture, Universidade de Lisboa (FA.ULisboa), Jorge Cruz Pinto started teaching in 2009. He graduated in Architecture from FA.UTL in 1984 and earned his Ph.D. from the Polytechnic University of Madrid in 1998. Throughout his career, Pinto has held influential roles, including President of the FAUTL Scientific Committee (2019–2024) and Head of the Architectural Design Department (2002–2010).
Pinto founded and directed the CIAUD (Research Centre in Architecture, Urban Design and Design) shaping its interdisciplinary focus. He also established the ADAPT Lab, a platform that bridges architectural theory, design, and technology. An internationally respected educator, Pinto has taught as an invited professor at La Sapienza University in Rome (2006–2012) and the University of Basilicata (2014–2015).
He is the author of influential works on architectural theory, including The Box, Metaphor and Architecture (2007), Eloge du Vide (2010), and Geometries of the Gaze and the Invisibility (2018). These explore themes such as spatial boundaries, metaphors in design, and the perception of geometry. His forthcoming book, The Transformer Tower (2024), continues his investigation into architectural abstraction and transformation.
Pinto’s research includes projects such as Architectural Storytelling, Eco-Solar Transformer Architecture, and In Praise of Emptiness, exploring sustainability, narrative potential, and abstract spatial concepts. His contributions blend architectural design with broader cultural and environmental discourses, highlighting the narrative and metaphysical dimensions of space.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Cruz Pinto is an active visual artist. His art practice investigates the intersections of architecture, painting, sculpture, and installation, often centered on the concept of emptiness. Works such as Para-Architectures reflect his philosophical approach, elevating emptiness as a guiding principle in both art and design. Cruz Pinto’s career exemplifies a dynamic integration of teaching, research, and artistic exploration, positioning him as a key figure in contemporary architectural thought.
