Since graduating in Architecture from the Faculdade de Arquitetura da Universidade de Lisboa in 1987, Jorge Mealha has developed a professional and academic career distinguished by the close integration of architectural practice, teaching, and research. In 1991, he established his own architectural office, through which he has designed a wide range of projects including office buildings, commercial spaces, residential complexes, industrial facilities, schools, and sports infrastructures. His architectural approach is characterized by the articulation of creative design, technical precision, and a strong understanding of project management, extending beyond design into areas such as cost control and construction site supervision.
Parallel to his professional practice, Jorge Mealha has maintained a continuous academic career at the Lisbon School of Architecture (FA.ULisboa) since 1991, where he has taught architectural design across different levels of the curriculum. He currently teaches the fifth-year Design Project studio, contributing to the education of new generations of architects through the integration of practical experience and theoretical reflection.
Over the course of his career, his work has achieved significant national and international recognition. He has been awarded in seventeen national and international architecture competitions, and several of his projects have been published in more than forty international architectural journals, contributing to the international dissemination of his work. In parallel, he has authored three books dedicated to his architectural practice, reinforcing his contribution to contemporary architectural discourse.
His projects have received numerous distinctions and nominations, including finalist positions for the Prémio Construir in 2012 and 2015, and nomination for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture, Mies van der Rohe Award in 2015. His work was also selected for important international exhibitions and platforms, such as Architects@Work (2015–2016), LaMipa – Iberian Architecture at the Beijing Design Week (2014) and the FAD Iberian Architecture Prize (2015). Further international recognition followed through distinctions including the A+ Awards (2015), the Iconic Awards (2015) by the German Design Council, the German Design Award (2017), and the American Architecture Prize in 2017.
