Deeply rooted in the central and eastern regions of Portugal, particularly in the municipalities of Castelo Branco, Fundão, Covilhã, Idanha-a-Nova and Portalegre, José Pires Branco work over a span of nearly forty years, developing a body of work that mapped and defined the architectural landscape of this vast territory, combining public and private commissions across a diverse socio-cultural spectrum. His career was shaped by a voluntary eclecticism, evolving from his early encounters with modernist principles to a later embrace of vernacular architecture and contextual modernism.

In the late 1950s, Pires Branco was the only architect residing in the region, which stimulated his engagement with modernist ideals. His early projects, including the restaurant/inn in Piornos (1962) and the holiday home in Penhas da Saúde (1960), demonstrated his capacity to merge modernist forms with the unique characteristics of the region’s terrain. His architectural practice continued to evolve, notably with the Externato de Santa Teresinha (Fundão, 1960-1962), a public school that marked a synthesis of modernist principles and regional sensitivity. This project exemplified his ability to integrate traditional building materials, such as stone and concrete, with new spatial and tectonic configurations.

Pires Branco also made significant contributions to the design of religious buildings, such as the Church of Águas (1957) and the Church of Nª Sª de Valongo (Castelo Branco, 1990), combining modernist and vernacular elements. His work in public buildings, including the Centro de Segurança Social (1977-1979) in Castelo Branco and the Jardim Municipal de Idanha-a-Nova (1985), further highlighted his commitment to designing spaces that were both functional and attuned to the local context.

As an urban planner, Pires Branco held several key positions in the central and local administration, including as director of the Urban Planning Department in Castelo Branco. His work reflects a careful balance between modernity and tradition, with an enduring influence on the architectural identity of central Portugal.
