Margarida Gamito is a distinguished professional design, with a focus on color and its impact on urban environments. She holds a degree in Communication Design from IADE-U: Superior Institute of Visual Arts, Design and Marketing in Lisbon. Her academic journey furthered with a master’s degree in Color in Architecture from the Architecture Faculty at Lisbon Technical University, where she wrote her dissertation on “Color in Design Formation.” Subsequently, she completed a PhD in Design at the same institution, focusing on “Color in Urban Furniture: a factor for Inclusivity, Orientation and Identification,” a topic that merges design with social inclusion and urban navigation.
Her academic path continued with a Post-Doctorate at the Faculty of Architecture at the Universidade de Lisboa, where she developed the project “Chromatic Planning in Urban Furniture – development of a project methodology.” This project builds on her PhD research, contributing to the understanding of chromatic elements in urban spaces and their importance in design methodology. It also integrates into the research program of CIAUD (Research Centre in Architecture, Urbanism, and Design), further cementing her role as a key figure in the field of design research.
Between 1983 and 2010, Gamito was a faculty member at IADE, where she taught and shaped the next generation of design professionals. Her influence also extended to the broader design community as she was a founding member of APCor – the Portuguese Color Association, where she served as president from 2013 to 2018. Her leadership within APCor demonstrated her commitment to promoting the importance of colour in design and urban planning.
