Miguel Jacobetty Rosa (1901–1970) was a prominent Portuguese architect known for his significant contributions to 20th-century architecture and urban planning in Portugal. Born in Alcobaça on February 24, 1901, he graduated with distinction from the Escola Superior de Belas Artes de Lisboa. Jacobetty Rosa worked extensively with Lisbon’s City Council between 1938 and 1970 and served at the Ministry of Public Works and Communications from 1939 to 1944. Additionally, he collaborated with João Faria da Costa’s architectural office during this period.
His career was marked by a series of important works and urban planning projects. He played a key role in developing urban plans for cities such as Portalegre, Vila Franca de Xira, and Alhandra. Notable buildings he designed include the Estádio Nacional do Jamor, the Bairro de São Miguel urban plan, and the Pousadas in Elvas, Santiago do Cacém, and São Brás de Alportel. Jacobetty Rosa was awarded the Valmor Prize in 1931 for his modernist housing project in Campo de Ourique.
He also contributed to several governmental projects, including São Miguel neighbourhood, in Alvalade and Avenida Marginal, in Funchal. He was involved in major infrastructure projects, such as the Viaduto de Alcântara and the Lisbon-Cascais coastal road, under the guidance of Duarte Pacheco.
Throughout his career, Jacobetty Rosa’s architectural style evolved. Early on, he embraced a modernist and functionalist approach, as seen in his work on the Instituto de Educação Física and Estádio Nacional. Later, he adopted a more traditionalist aesthetic in public buildings and urban plans. His legacy continues to influence Lisbon’s architectural landscape and the development of its urban fabric in the mid-20th century.
