Born in Portugal, Pedro Matos Gameiro graduated in Architecture from the Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade Técnica de Lisboa in 1995 and obtained his PhD from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Granada, Universidad de Granada, Spain, in 2014. Since 2004, he has been a professor at the Department of Architecture of the University of Évora, combining academic activity with professional practice. Since 1998, he has directed his own architectural office, developing work across architecture, urban intervention, and public space.
Pedro Matos Gameiro’s work has received extensive national and international recognition. His project for the Municipal Library and Archive of Grândola was nominated for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture, Mies van der Rohe Award 2022 and received several distinctions, including the FAD Award for City and Landscape 2022, the National FORMA Architecture Prize 2022, the CONSTRUIR 21 Award for Best Public Building, and the Architecture Prize in Alentejo awarded by the Portuguese Order of Architects SRALT in 2023. Other notable distinctions include finalist and selected projects for the FAD Awards, BIGMAT Awards, ENOR Awards, SECIL Prize, German Design Award, DEZEEN Awards, AZ Awards, and the HIŠE Award, reflecting the international dissemination and critical recognition of his work.
Among his most recognized projects are the Casa em Alfama, Casa no Chiado, the Carnet C10 installation at the Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar, the Municipal Library and Archive of Grândola, and the Adega and Student Residence at the Mosteiro de Santa Maria do Mar in Sassoeiros. His architecture is characterized by a rigorous engagement with place, materiality, and spatial continuity, articulating contemporary architectural language with historical and territorial contexts.
In addition to professional practice and teaching, Pedro Matos Gameiro has participated as a jury member in several architectural awards and international public competitions, including the FAD Awards and the FORMA Prize, as nominated by the Portuguese Order of Architects. His work has been widely published and presented in conferences and exhibitions across Europe, North and South America, and Asia, including Portugal, Spain, Italy, Belgium, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia, Poland, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Hong Kong and South Korea.
