Born in 1932, Rui de Sousa Cardim was an important Portuguese architect and educator whose career left a lasting mark on both architectural practice and architectural education in Portugal. He served as Full Professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon, where he played a decisive role in the formation of several generations of architects until his retirement in 2001. Alongside his academic activity, he was also a member of the National Academy of Fine Arts, contributing to the broader cultural and institutional debate surrounding architecture and the arts in Portugal.
Rui de Sousa Cardim’s most recognized architectural work was the building of the Instituto Jacob Rodrigues Pereira, part of the Casa Pia de Lisboa and dedicated to special education. Widely acknowledged for its architectural quality, the project received the prestigious Valmor and Municipal Architecture Prize 1987. The building was particularly praised for its spatial clarity, compositional rigor, and sensitive response to the functional and human requirements of its users, demonstrating an architecture attentive both to technical precision and social responsibility.
Throughout his career, Rui de Sousa Cardim combined professional practice with an enduring commitment to architectural pedagogy and cultural reflection.
