Portuguese architect associated with the modernist generation of the mid-twentieth century, Sabino Luís Martins Correia developed architectural work both in mainland Portugal and within the colonial context of Angola. His production reflects the experimental character of post-war modernism, particularly through the articulation between modern architectural language, liturgical reform, and regional cultural references.
His most celebrated work is the Igreja da Sagrada Família de Maculusso, inaugurated in 1964 and designed in collaboration with the architect António de Sousa Mendes. The church became one of the most significant examples of modern religious architecture in the Portuguese-speaking world and was closely associated with the ideals of the Movimento de Renovação de Arte Religiosa. Through the combination of industrial geometric forms, modern construction principles, and selected traditional references, the project proposed an innovative interpretation of sacred liturgical space, emphasizing spatial abstraction, monumentality, and the expressive use of light and structure.
During the early 1960s, he also developed the preliminary design for the Regional Museum of Santarém, conceived as a cultural institution dedicated to fine arts, equestrian culture, and bullfighting traditions. The project sought to address what was perceived as a cultural deficiency within the Ribatejo region through an architecture characterized by formal restraint and contextual sensitivity. In particular, the proposal demonstrated concern for its historical surroundings, especially in relation to the neighbouring Torre das Cabaças, establishing a careful dialogue between contemporary intervention and historical urban fabric.
Between 1955 and 1957, Sabino Corrêa collaborated with the Direção de Edifícios de Lisboa on several urban architectural projects, which included furniture design contributions by the architect Norberto Corrêa. These collaborations reveal a broader interest in the integration of architecture, urban design, and interior elements, reflecting the modernist ambition of conceiving architecture as a coherent and total spatial experience.
