A prominent figure in Portuguese modern architecture, Sebastião Formosinho Sanches developed an extensive body of work that combined architectural practice, urban intervention, and academic activity. Graduating in Architecture from the Escola de Belas-Artes de Lisboa in 1949, he later became a professor at the same institution between 1964 and 1973, contributing decisively to the education of several generations of Portuguese architects. Throughout his career, he maintained an active role within architectural debate and professional culture in Portugal.

During the mid-1950s, Formosinho Sanches co-founded the Movimento para a Renovação da Arte Religiosa alongside architects such as Nuno Portas, Nuno Teotónio Pereira, Luís Cunha, and Diogo Lino Pimentel. The movement sought to renew the conception of sacred space through the integration of modern architectural principles with contemporary liturgical reform, responding to broader transformations in post-war European architecture. His contribution to the modernization of religious architecture was widely recognized, leading to distinctions such as Officer of the Order of Infante Dom Henrique in 1966 and Commander of the Order of Merit in 1983.

His architectural production encompassed residential developments, judicial buildings, healthcare facilities, and urban studies. Among his most celebrated projects is the Bairro das Estacas, developed in collaboration with the architect Ruy Jervis d’Athouguia between 1949 and 1955 in the Alvalade district of Lisbon. Awarded the Municipal Architecture Prize in 1954, the project became a landmark of Portuguese modern housing design through its innovative urban composition, spatial organization, and integration of collective living principles. He also played a significant role in the coordination of works for the Exposição de Arte, Ciência e Cultura held in Lisbon in 1983.

Additional important works include the Palácio da Justiça de Rio Maior, inaugurated in 1961, and the Tribunal Judicial do Redondo, completed in 1965. His engagement with healthcare architecture is evident in projects such as the Centro de Medicina de Reabilitação de Alcoitão and the Hospital de Miranda do Douro. Beyond individual buildings, he also contributed to urban planning studies, including proposals for the Lisbon waterfront and projects developed for EPUL (Empresa Pública de Urbanização de Lisboa).
