Associated with the generation of Portuguese architects active during the consolidation of modern architecture in the mid-twentieth century, Sérgio Botelho de Andrade Gomes graduated in Architecture from the Escola de Belas-Artes de Lisboa in 1949. Early in his professional career, he collaborated with several architectural offices and practitioners, experiences that contributed to the development of his architectural language and professional practice within the evolving context of Portuguese modernism.

Among his most notable works is the Palácio das Corporações, originally conceived in 1958 as the Hotel Vera Cruz. Designed with seventeen floors above ground, the project reflected the growing metropolitan ambitions of Lisbon during the period. Construction was later interrupted, and the building was subsequently adapted to accommodate the services of the Ministry of Corporations. This transformation included the addition of four further floors and the interior decoration of the ministerial areas by the architect Frederico George. The building became an important example of the relationship between modern architecture and institutional representation during the Estado Novo period.

Sérgio Botelho de Andrade Gomes also participated in the coordination of works for the Exposition of Art, Science, and Culture held in Lisbon in 1983, contributing to the cultural and urban renewal initiatives associated with the event. His involvement in projects of this nature demonstrates his engagement with broader processes of urban transformation and public representation through architecture.

Throughout his career, he received several distinctions recognizing his professional contributions and public service. In 1966, he was appointed Officer of the Order of Infante Dom Henrique, and in 1983 he was honoured as Commander of the Order of Merit. These distinctions acknowledged his impact on Portuguese architecture and his sustained contribution to the architectural and cultural development of Portugal.
