Specializing in architectural conservation and heritage preservation, Sérgio Infante was born in Lisbon in 1947. His academic and professional career has been closely associated with the study, safeguarding, and rehabilitation of historic architecture and urban heritage in Portugal and abroad. Beginning his teaching career in 1976 at the Escola Superior de Belas-Artes de Lisboa, he later taught at the Faculty of Architecture of the Universidade Lusíada and at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon, from which he retired as professor.
Sérgio Infante completed his doctorate in Architecture at the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa in 1993 with the dissertation Conservation and Development, awarded “with distinction and praise.” His academic work established a significant contribution to the theoretical relationship between architectural conservation, urban transformation, and contemporary development. Internationally recognized in the field of heritage preservation, he served as President of the Portuguese National Committee of ICOMOS between 1987 and 1993, playing an important role in the protection and management of Portuguese cultural heritage.
During the 1970s, he collaborated with the Portuguese Secretariat of State for the Environment on the classification and intervention of sites of architectural and natural significance. Seeking specialized training in conservation, he attended the Centre for the Conservation of Historic Towns and Buildings at the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium, where he obtained a certificate in 1978. In the same year, he also completed a diploma in Monument Conservation at the University of Eger, Hungary. Between 1978 and 1980, he collaborated with Professor Raymond Lemaire at the Bureau d’Études pour la Sauvegarde des Monuments et Ensembles Historiques in Belgium, further consolidating his international experience in heritage conservation.
In Portugal, Sérgio Infante served on the 9th Section of the Advisory Council on Architectural Heritage of the Instituto Português do Património Cultural between 1986 and 1992. He also contributed to the drafting of the International Charter for the Safeguarding of Historic Cities in 1986, reinforcing his active participation in international debates concerning heritage policy and conservation methodologies. From 1994 onwards, he taught at the Centre for Conservation R. Lemaire of the Catholic University of Louvain, advising postgraduate students and researchers in the field of architectural conservation.
As director of the architectural consultancy SIGeRP, Sérgio Infante coordinated numerous restoration and rehabilitation projects, including interventions in degraded urban areas and the adaptive reuse of historic buildings. A member of the Ordem dos Arquitectos, the Sociedade de Geografia de Lisboa, and ICOMOS, his career has been marked by a sustained commitment to the preservation, rehabilitation, and critical modernization of Portugal’s architectural and urban heritage.
